Book Launch: Anarchist Popular Power – Dissident Labor and Armed Struggle in Uruguay 1956-76

We are excited to announce the launch event for Troy Andreas Araiza Kokinis’ new book ‘Anarchist Popular Power: Dissident Labor and Armed Struggle in Uruguay 1956-76’ published by AK Press.

Troy’s book is the first ever English language history of the Federación Anarquista Uruguaya (FAU). It was the militants of the FAU who first developed the anarchist strategic theory of especisfismo, which is today gaining attention across the globe.

From hotly contested shop floor struggles, to clandestine operations and guerrilla warfare against the US backed military dictatorship which seized power in the country through a coup in 1973, Troy’s book follows events in harrowing detail and with scholarly precision.

We invite you to join us on Tuesday, July 18 at Tamarack in Oakland, California for the official launch of the book!

More event details will be announced in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

The event will include readings from the text, a broad discussion of revolutionary social movement activity in Latin America during the period examined, and lessons that revolutionaries can draw on today.

RSVP on Facebook at this link.

If you are unable to make it to the launch event, the book is now available for preorder from AK Press

This event is cosponsored by AK Press and Black Rose / Rosa Negra Anarchist Federation.

If you’d like to read more about the FAU, we recommend Tommy Lawson’s An Organisation of Militants: The Federación Anarquista Uruguaya. We also recommend Troy’s recent obituary of Juan Carlos Mechoso, a leading militant and theoretician of the FAU who passed away in late 2022.
